Long Lane Garden

The Site

This was an exciting prospect - the existing garden was mainly laid to lawn with only a few unwanted shrubs - virtually a blank canvas.

The Design

Circular shapes and winding paths were used to give interest and a sense of movement to this elongated rectangular plot. Crazy paving edged by brick pavers were chosen to match the existing patio.

Garden design principles were carefully considered to create a sense of unity, rhythm and repetition, scale, proportion and balance as well as providing lots of contrast with the planting.

The planting

Several small trees were selected to give colour and interest throughout the year.Although they are all deciduous, they look wonderful all through the seasons with blossom, fresh leaves, fruits, autumn colour and interesting bark.

A variety of evergreens provide an attractive backdrop to other seasonal planting throughout the year.

Seasonal and yearly dynamics in the planting were taken into account. Early and late summer flowering herbaceous plants were positioned alternately around the border to avoid large gaps.

Early flowering bulbs were planted in drifts to give interest until the herbaceous plants 'take over' in late spring.
